Letenye English Camp

For the second year, we partnered with the education department at Asbury University to hold an English camp in Letenya, Hungary. Out of the 17 people from Asbury, 8 of them were returning from the team last year. One of my favorite memories from this week was on the first day of camp. When we were all walking into the school to start setting up, some of the kids were already lined up waiting for us to arrive. So many of them remembered the Asbury students from last year. It was so special to see how much of an impact last summer had on both the kids living in Letenye and on the students from Asbury.

This year was set up much the same as last year. During the first half of the day, the students rotated through five different classrooms. Each afternoon we did a fun activity, including the gospel choir from last year, an afternoon at the lake, and a carnival behind the school. We had over 80 kids come to camp this year, which is the highest attendance we’ve ever had! It was such a great week getting to see the kids again and watch all of the new and returning Asbury students lead so well.

Spain Celebration Prep

Over the past few months, I have been working on a very fun project. OMS has a camp about 2 hours east of Madrid, Spain. The camp, Peña de Horeb, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this October. As part of this 4-day celebration, we are hosting a family day carnival for the surrounding communities. I have the privilege of planning this part of the event.

The first phase of this project was planning. This is where my experience lesson planning came in handy! I spent the first few months detailing out what games and activities we would have during this carnival, what materials we would need, and where to find everything. As of right now, we will have 15 different booths. It has been a lot to plan, but it has been so much fun, and I am so excited to see how it all comes together.

The next phase of this project is preparation. October is fast approaching and with 15 booths, there is a lot to do. In July, I spent two weeks at the camp starting to put together a lot of the booths. I hadn’t been to the camp before, so this time was such a great way to see first-hand the impact that Peña has on the community.
